After their early season victory against the host side Beaufort Juniors had the table turned on them in this return encounter being outscored 5 tries to 2 . Beaufort completed the first half of their season with a fine win to elevate them into second spot in division six east.

The alacrity of the opening ten minutes was striking and set the pattern for an enthralling match.. The passion and intensity of the home side attack and determination in defence never waived in a performance which was one of their best of the season Within minutes they had Rogerstone in trouble in the set piece . The visitors were a much bigger unit but they struggled to contain the scrummage that produced the opening for the first try. Scrum half Dan Croft had time to pick a spot for a well measured kick behind the visitors defence and Lewis Hodson's hoof of the unchecked ball to the line gave the fullback a clear run in for the first score.

Rogerstone hit back immediately after the restart . Beaufort were pinged for being offside and Rogerstone took the points on offer. This brought composure to the side that had yet to take advantage of their heavier presence. They were helped by a catalogue of unforced handling errors by the host side which they put to good advantage to get them to the try line. A desperate defence was eventually breached and the visitors stole the lead 8 points to 5.

But the lead did not sit easy with them There were already signs that Beaufort's lighter pack with their superior scrummaging skills were having the better of the exchanges. It was the key to the eventual win.and on the half hour they had Rogerstone entrenched on their own line . Champing at the base of the scrum was twenty year old Croft displaying a maturity beyond his years . He pounced at the tail of a driving scrum getting Beaufort's second try under the posts . Hodson's conversion was a simple one and it captured the s lead 12 points to 8 at the break.

With a slight wind advantage Rogerstone should have done better in the second half. They kicked well but failed to turn it to advantage while a buoyed up Beaufort took every opportunity to exploit their dominance in the set piece. It was this that finally settled the contest. Towards the end of the final quarter the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty try as Rogerstone collapsed a flagging scrum It was enough to put the game beyond their reach.

It was a supreme effort from the home side pack with lock Craig Bennett giving his best performance of the season while the team's youngest player Dan Croft was deservedly named man of the match.

It was another comfortable win for Beaufort Juniors notching up 8 tries against 4 conceded, They went through the phases in text book fashion and with good unselfish off loads it brought them the rewards. Caerleon never gave up but they were up against a home unit that controlled the match from the kick off. On half way Beaufort were well on their way with a 17 points to 5 lead from 3 tries and a conversion to one try . Caerleon had a better second half but could not outscore the host team who grabbed a further 5 . Aaron Boulter improved his season's tally with a brace as did man of the match Joel Harries with another two and a try apiece for Ryan Hale, Chris Follis , Ieaun Jones and captain Finlay Nash, getting his first of the season . Ryan Hale kicked the extra points for a good all round performance

WHITEHEADS RFC 7 - BEAUFORT RFC 24 POINTS

This was a scrappy encounter which Beaufort managed to turn into a bonus point win from four tries to one conceded. For them the primary agents of agony were the horrors and policing at the breakdown which they were not happy about but most of all it was at the lineout that Beaufort failed most. The gremlins returned again to haunt and deny them a solid platform to launch their attacks that were only sporadic in a less than inspiring first half. Whiteheads had a decent pack of forwards that outweighed Beaufort. They were occasionally dynamic but discipline was an issue for both teams and Whiteheads were punished most for their indiscretions. There was steady stream of players sent to the side lines throughout the contest which did little to inject some zest into the performances from both sides

The first points came after fifteen minutes when some honest endeavour fom the home side bigger pack helped by the heavy conditions kept Beaufort pinned down . The visitors had a clearance kick charge down and Whiteheads grabbed a corner try which was converted from the touchline. Beaufort's response was immediate . They managed to string a series of passes together with precision and at pace . Centre Kyle Purnell's final pass put his wing Lee Roper on a touchline run which he finished off superbly in the corner. Lewis Hodson narrowly missed the conversion and Beaufort went into the break 7 points to 5 in arrears

In the third quarter Beaufort at last put some energy and snap into their attack. Their back row of Justin Bennett, Jason Taylor and No 8 Andrew Morgan as the chief ball carriers were making deep incisions into the Whitehead's heartland. It was Morgan who was justly awarded a try for his efforts . Hodson kicked the extra points and Beaufort were now in the lead. Their third try came after a comedy of errors following a Whitehead lineout. The referee waved play on leaving the Whitehead pack in a fog of bewilderment as fullback Matthew Burrows sped away down the right flank . A perfectly judged pass to his left gave Hodson a clear run to the posts and he converted his own try to stretch the lead to 19 points to 5. The game was now slipping away from the host team and with ten minutes of game time left was settled beyond all doubt when hooker Aaron Thompson speed in the loose was demonstrated for him to latch on to a pass to score the bonus point try

It was a ten try bonaza for Beaufort Juniors against a game Bedwas side that were playing only their second game of the season. Ryan Hale scored his first hat trick of the season , Ryan Davies and new comer Josh Hodson notched up two apiece with Morgan Woodland, Tom Williams and Daffyd Watkins getting one each. Woodland had an excellent game with the boot slotting over six conversions and Ryan Hale a further two . Beaufort's star man on the day was Ciaran Gooding who has made huge strides forward this year to justly deserve the accolade .

Beaufort can be well pleased with this bonus point win in which they were made to work harder than the score line reflects. It was a contest between two teams of contrasting styles.Hartridge had the structure for a pick up and drive game in which they excelled testing the Beaufort defence to the full but they were totally lacking in any vibrancy behind . The visitors were undone by a series of gaffs and handling blunders which to do so was to court disaster with the host side that had enough, edge steel and pace to inflict serious damage.

Lewis Hodson got Beaufort off to a good start with a penalty .This was quickly followed by the first try. A touchline kick was not checked by the visitors that bounced back into the waiting arms of wing Kyle Purnell who stood up in the tackle long enough for his fullback Matthew Burrows to take a pass and he raced through a yawning gap to make the touchdown for Hodson to convert. It was a neat chip by Darrel Roper behind the defence that led to the second . His brother Lee made the most of the loose ball to score in the corner. Hodson's majestic kick from the touchline improved the score to 17 points without reply. On the half hour they had scored again when Hartridge lost the ball in contact and Hodson's speed carried him through a hapless defence to cross the try line leaving him a simple conversion

Hartridge had already served notice of their forward power in a series of passionate driving mauls which Beaufort only just managed to quell But in the last ten minutes of an all action first half they went through the phases retaining the ball in a relentless series of drives to keep Beaufort pinned down on their line . The defence finally cracked and the visitors earned themselves a deserved try to end the half 24 points to 5 in arrears

Beaufort's bonus point try was not long coming after the restart. Skillful handling mixed with bags of pace and electricity in the attack got their opponents in trouble again . On this occasion it was Purnell who was the benificary of a fine passage of play for the fourth try. However, Hartridge struck back again with another telling driving maul that Beaufort failed to stop. A touchline conversion narrowed the gap with still plenty of game time left. But just before the end of the third quarter a lightening Beaufort attack from half way created the overlap and centre Geraint Phillips crashed over for a fifth touchdown to extend the lead to 34 points to 12

The last try came with just 10 minutes of playing time to stop any hope of a Hartridge revival With the Beaufort's backs having scoredall the points it was fitting that the hard work of the forwards should get some recognition and it was No 8 Andrew Morgan who capped a fine display to get Beaufort's sixth which Hodson slotted over. Hartridge did finish strongly as Beaufort were pinged continuously and had a player sin binned. But they failed to make any telling advantage to get a consolation score.

Beaufort slumped to their second successive defeat and the first at home this season against high fliers Caerleon.

It was a lively start from the host team to put pressure on the visitors but unfortunately they could not make the advantage tell and missed an easy penalty, Caerleon looked a competent outfit with a strong scrummage and a stubborn defence and , in contrast to Beaufort, took their chances. Although Beaufort held the ascend ency in a pulsating first quarter a rare incursion by Caerleon into Beaufort's 22 brought the first touchdown A nudge in the scrummage and enough forward drive to break from the base got Caerleaon a touchdown under the posts . It was a simple conversion to give them a 7 point lead and served notice to Beaufort this was a team on top of their game . They struck back with a penalty but found the Caerleon defence difficult to break down in spite of a series of powerful drives. Just before the half hour flanker Jason Taylor made a thunderous run up the middle of the park to break clear. At last the impetus was there for his threequarters to finish off the move and centre Mike Vaughan did it in fine style . A superb touchline conversion by Lewis Hodson in tricky conditions gave Beaufort the lead . Both teams then exchanged penalties before the half time break with Beaufort just in front 13 points to 10.

After the break there was expectation in the Beaufort camp that with a wind advantage they would exert enough pressure to open up the cracks in the Caerleon cover defence. However, the alacrity of their first half play sagged badly . Nothing like the first half momentum was attained again .The penalty count weighed heavy against them and to lose possession to a quality team like Caerleon was to court disaster. Inevitably a gallant defence was just not good enough and with little possession for their opponents to kick themselves out of trouble Caerleon sensed with patience they would find the opening. At the at the end of the third quarter they did it in ruthless fashion to recapture the lead with a try . Before the end they struck again as desperate measures by the home side led to mistakes and they were punished accordingly to put the result beyond doubt.

Next week Beaufort travel to St Josephs Newport.

Another cracking performance from Beaufort Juniors earned them 9 tries to just one conceded in a game that they never lost control of.They led 19 points to 5 at the break after which the flood gates opened. Two hat tricks were scored one by centre Ieaun Jones who impressed throughout the game , the other was by prop Aaron Boulter with Morgan Woodland, Rhys Bayliss and man of the match Joel Harries getting one apiece. In windy conditions Morgan Woodland fired over 6 conversions.

This was a superb contest between two evenly matched sides and a much better performance from Beaufort from recent weeks. But it was another poor start by them . When they did find their rhythm they produced some good rugby to craft out six good tries against 3 conceded. Leading 17 points to 10 at the break they managed to keep the host side at bay and maintained a comfortable margin on the score board for the rest of the encounter . Rhys Bayliss notched up another hat trick, his second of the season, supported on the scoresheet by Aaron Boulter, Callum Poole and Jack Sewell who grabbed one apiece. Boulter also slotted over 1 conversion and Morgan Woodland kicked three. Jack Sewell was commended by both coaches for his excellent support work. There are also a few new faces at he club but the coaches are still looking to strengthen it further. Training is 5.30pm on Wednesdays at Carmeltown recreational ground

Beaufort's winning streak came to an abrupt end against local rivals Trefil who outscored the visitors 3 tries to 2 in a less than inspiring league contest. It was a serious case of Beaufort under performing particularly in the first half when they had the advantage of the Trefil slope. They suffered a crisis in their line out allowing Trefil to plunder them with consummate ease while a catalogue of handling errors kept them under constant pressure . Both sides missed kickable penalties but towards the end of the first quarter Martin Edwards fired one over to give the home side the lead. On the half hour they scored the first try . Beaufort lost ball in contact and from loose play Trefil's Hartley thundered in for a try seemingly out of nothing . Lewis Hodson kicked a penalty to narrow the gap but almost immediately from the kick off poor communication in the Beaufort defence failed to secure the high ball which bounced conveniently into the arms of Kevin Lewis . Beaufort could only watch in bewilderment as he galloped in for a simple touch down. Edwards slotted over the conversion for a a deserved half time lead of 15 point to 3

It didn't get any better for Beaufort after the break as they struggled to get some shape into their game to chase down the lead When the next score came it was from Trefi's Christian Jones who was the beneficiary of some good work from his forwards enabling him to race in for his side's third try. With Edwards kicking the extra points it looked all over for a hapless Beaufort. But then Beaufort gave a fleeting glimpse of redemption and managed to bring some valuable zest into their attack . Wing Kyle Purnell touch line rumble was finshed off by his scrumhalf John Davies and with ten minutes of game time left Hodson against the run of play intercepted a pass to race the whole length of the field to touch down under the posts.for a simple conversion It was the last score of the encounter which give Beaufort an improbable losing bonus point. Next week Beaufort host Caerleon which promises to be another difficult encounter. While Trefil head off to Blaenavon Forgeside.

Beaufort Juniors got themselves back to winning ways with a comfortable win against their Blackwood rivals They were too strong for the visitors in the set pieces and by half time had notched up an unassailable lead of 39 points with their opponents being restricted to just one penalty , their only score of the contest.However, the host side can still improve their game in the tackle area and need to off load load to support players more rather than retain the ball too long to squander chances that came thier way in abundance, But they did score 8 tries in all with centre Ieaun Jones getting a personal tally of five, standoff Rhys Bayliss, wing Tom Williams and lock Callum Poole getting one apiece. The extra points were added by Rhys Bayliss who kicked one conversion and Morgan Woodland 4 . Beaufort's prop Connor Davies gave a star studded performance and led the side by example to be man of the match

This was the least impressive performance from Beaufort in five league outings. The natural pace and rhythm which the home side had previously shown was not on parade and they were below their creative best. Still they managed to cobble together four tries to gain a fifth consecutive bonus point win to put them on top of the table.

New Panteg were a much better outfit than their recent results implied which may have contributed to how Beaufort approached the encounter .They had an impressive back division and throughout maintained a stubborn defence. Beaufort found themselves in arrears within minutes of the kickoff when from a scrummage New Panteg broke clear and a hapless Beaufort defence failed to make the tackles to stop a try under the posts.which was improved by a simple conversion, Ten minutes of real anxiety followed as Beaufort tried to regain their composure .They survived without further damage although the visitors did have their chances to improve the score with a kickable penalty.
Beaufort's Lewis Hodson and Justin Bennett both came close to scoring but it was not until the second quarter that the line was finally breached when Bennett rumbled over from a tapped penalty . Before half time they had triumphed again with a clean break from centre Geraint Phillips and a well timed pass from prop Matthew Harding put centre MikeVaughan clear for a second touchdown, From two conversions Hodson took Beaufort's into a 14 point to 7 lead

With just five minutes of the second half played New Panteg get on level terms again with what was arguably the best try of the encounter. A loose kick was run from a deep position by a lively three quarter line which Beaufort failed to to defend in numbers . It resulted in a well worked try under the posts for an easy conversion. A stunned Beaufort then struggled to raise the tempo of their game. They did not help matters by some indifferent play in the loose while the gremlines appeared to have returned to haunt them again at he lineout where they failed to hold on to their own ball.. But in the third quarter they got good field position and conjured up at third try with Kyle Purnell latching on to the final pass . Hodson secured the conversion to put some daylight between the scores But when an act of indiscipline gifted New Panteg a penalty it was game on again as the margin narrowed to 4 points. Luck favoured the home side as the game drifted into the final quarter . A loose ball from a scrum on halfway should have given the visitors the chance to break clear up field. They failed to take advantage allowing Paul Francis to retrive the situation . He set off on a superb 45 metre touchline run to weave his way through the last remnants of a flat footed defence for a try under the post which Hodson converted. It was enough to settle the contest

The weekly prize numbers were 3:: 12; 22; 23 . There were no winners

Despite losing this match it was a decent performance from Beaufort who were up against a much bigger pack. But they coped well despite having traveling without any replacements and more than held their own particularly at scrummaging But the home side fielded a superb attacking threequarter unit which in the end was Beaufort's undoing.. It was a close call at half time with them trailing just 15 points to 12 . They did make 5 touch downs with Rhys Bayliss notching up his first hatrick of the season and was Beaufort's star performer on the day. Jack Jewell and Owen Preece got one apiece and Ryan Hale slotted over one conversion. Beaufort are still looking to strenghten their squad particularly in the three quarters. The Annoying Twats XV vs Fatties XV

It was a night of an onward march by The Annoying Twats and a weary farewell from The Fatties. On the fourth day after leaking 12 tries to The Thinnies, they shipped another dozen. The only firsts for the lowliest of the 20 teams here in Idiot World was that The Fatties became the first to finish their schedule and first to be heading for home.

They were given two going-away presents. James Corden, the back-row forward, was named man of the match. He looked a little sheepish as the announcement was made, although he had barged his heart out. Not so shy was Dawn French, who finished off a sweeping move involving just the one other player, her mucker from the second row, Russel Grant, who was given a sweet breakaway pass by Stuart Barnes. If Mr T could do it against the Shithouses, then why not The Annoying Twats's fly- half on the night he became his Group’s most-capped player, with 101 of them?

The Fatties try hardly spoke of a mighty comeback launched. The Annoying Twats had the game all wrapped up in 18 minutes, racing to a 22-0 lead. They then entered a quarter when the rust of age began to tell. They had stacked the ranks with a lot of their old-guard lame: Gillian McKeith herself, Deidre Barlow, Stuart Barnes and Noel Edmonds , victims all to the curse of the wounded calf. Gillian McKeith played with composure throughout, a reassuring performance from the old captain who will yet have a big part to play in the absence of John Inverdale.

The others took their time to find their sea legs and it was just as well they were involved in a game as easy as this. For a team in the supposed pool of death, The Annoying Twats could afford to be pretty untidy in their third game and allow some of their senior players to potter along for a while like senior citizens.

The scrum was not entirely solid, passes went astray and the ball was surrendered at the breakdown. It didn't matter, although Jeremy Kyle might not have been quite so tolerant with his half-time analysis. They all pulled through this scratchy session and all contributed to the fun of the second half.

As it unfolded, The Annoying Twats players young and old settled into a rhythm that was too fast for their opponents. It told on The Fatties on all fronts. At full strength they were increasingly bent out of shape. Reduced to 14, they suffered even more. The Penguin was binned for one of those scrummage thingummies and Michelle McManus went off injured in a golf buggy. All eyes turned to Kerry Katona at this moment, but he studiously kept his distance.

Having used up their quota of replacements, The Fatties finished the game with 14, of whom 13 were out on their feet. Sherman Klump, of course, kept going to the very end.

If one serious point can be made about this Annoying Twats performance is that the team that opened in such sparkling style against The Thinnies are driven by their young players, not their old guard. Deidre Barlow rolled back the years with a genuine sprint from 30 metres but more influential on the The Annoying Twats side were H from Steps in the centre, Lenny Henry, Jordan, Justin Bieber and The Bloke from Safestyle Windows Advert. Youth has taken over, direct and fearless. Jon from Jedward came on and showed that he has the fastest pass from a scrum-half in the squad.

Any hands put up tended to be by this classroom generation, keen to take charge. The Annoying Twats have scored three tries or more only three times in the 43 games of Jeremy Kyles tenure as coach. Of the 73 tries they have scored before this game, Keith Chegwin has scored more than a quarter. Others began to chase the record try-scorer here, with Lenny Henry bagging a hat-trick and Justin Bieber a brace.

Jeremy Kyles record has not been brilliant for more than a year but his investment in a brand new bunch – his core of very junior senior players, as it were – seems to be paying off. Of course, the fun was fleeting; they now plunge back into the deep end of their pool. Supervillans are next, with The Annoying Twats in no mood to say farewell to the Idiots Cup just yet.

With both teams on maximum league points this was bound to have enough edge and steel in the contest to make it a compelling encounter and it lived up to all expectations. It wasn't until the last minute of play that Beaufort, already with a bonus point in the bag from four tries,
could let out a huge sigh of relief leaving the home side with a losing bonus point.

Beaufort began well attacking thrillingly from their own territory and were soon on the score sheet . Slick handling by their three quarters created the space
on the right flank for wing Kyle Purnell to race through for a try straight out of the text book. Lewis Hodson's wide angled conversion struck the cross bar but bounced over for a 7 point lead. Minutes later they came close to scoring again being stopped just short by a resolute Markham defence.

Then after ten minutes of play the referee sent a Markham player to the sin bin and showed a red card to his opposite number for retaliation. Beaufort had to pit themselves for the most of the match with fourteen men against a determined buoyed up host side. Despite superiority in numbers Markham could only manage a single penalty before the break . However , the penalty count was an issue in this match ; an unprecedented 20 to 4 against Beaufort. They were fortunate that Markham failed to exploit this advantage to the full.

When the next score came it was from Beaufort. A breakout out by fullback Hodson was finished off out wide with precision for a splendid try by Matthew Burrows.

This was quickly followed by another,an arguably the best try of the encounter. Beaufort attacked from deep and a wonderfully weighted pass from Chris Morris found Hodson, who cut a suberb angle at pace to notch up Beaufort's a third try and 17 point to 3 lead.

Beaufort then got themselves in trouble again with a sin binning offence reducing their number still further to 13. On this occasion Markham took full advantage and
despite herculean efforts by a robust Beaufort defence, the host side eventually crashed over their first try. From the the touchline Markham slotted over the conversion.

.But jubilation in their ranks was soon muted . From the restart a clearance kick was charged down by Beaufort's omnipotent flanker Andrew Morgan who collected the loose ball to off load into the waiting hands of Aaron Thomson. The hooker took his chance to scamper over in the corner to score Beaufort's fourth and bonus point try.

Beaufort's scoreline was improved to 22 points to 10 but they failed to nail their conversions and in the last quarter the lead did not sit easy with them.
They were continually punished sometimes harshly for technical offences in the scrummage and the line out thereby sacrificing hard fought territorial gains which kept them encamped in their 22. A Markham attack and some superb handling skills by an impressive centre partnership got them a second try and with the converion brought them within 5 points of the lead. With eight minutes of injury time being played the raucous atmosphere around King Georges Field from both sets of supporters reached boiling point as they urged on their teams. But Beaufort kept their nerve to hold out for a deserved win.

Beaufort's outstanding player on the day was Aron Thompson richly deserving the accolade of being Beaufort man of the match.

Reigning Fictional XV Cup Holders Old Eastenders survived a huge scare in their defence opener as Current Eastenders ran them close in Walford.

Eddie Moon’s side took a 16-10 lead after 54 minutes through their only try, by Janine Butcher.

But Wellard's try and Ethel Skinner’s conversion killed Current Eastenders hopes.

Wellard's was one of two Old Eastenders tries, Angie Watts going over early on while Ethel Skinner and Bianca Butcher kicked the rest of their side's points.

The pre-match hype belonged to a Current Eastenders team never shy of expressing confidence that they could compete on equal terms with the Old Eastenders in the wake of recent history.

But the opening minutes belonged to “Dirty” Den Watts ' side as they launched an efficient, try-building attack that belied Old Eastenders's reputation as masters of kick-and-chase.

Instead from Alfie Moon's kick-off, the ball moved through numerous hands and after a brief break for a scrum, the assault continued until Angie Watts fended off Ian Beale and Bianca Butcher to score at the corner.

The move featured a rare, but crucial missed tackle on “Dirty” Den Watts by Current Eastenders captain Ricky Butcher.

Ethel Skinner added the conversion from the touchline to underline her side's confident start.

Much of the rest of the 2007 champions' opening period tactics reverted to the type that Eddie Moon predicted.

But if the Old Eastenders approach was familiar, so was Current Eastenders' as they attempted to keep ball in hand to move Old Eastenders's forwards around the field as much as possible.

Ethel Skinner kicked a penalty in the 19th minute after Kat Moon went offside at a ruck.

Current Eastenders' reward for their efforts, however, was not the try they hoped for, but two Bianca Butcher penalties, the second after Arthur Fowler's high tackle on Max Branning.

Bianca Butcher also had a penalty overruled in the opening period, referee Deidre Barlow adjudging it had gone wide although TV replays suggested it may have drifted in.

At the back Bianca Butcher and Carol Jackson suffered occasional wobbles under Old Eastenders's aerial barrage while up front both sides won scrum penalties and the line-out contest was also fairly even.

However, Current Eastenders were on top at the breakdown for large periods while the Old Eastenders could boast a capable defence as they went into the break 10-6 ahead.

Pauline Fowler’s side began the second half with the same attacking intent as the first, but on this occasion Ricky Butcher was equal to the challenge, stripping the Old Eastenders captain of the ball and forcing a penalty.

At the other end Ian Beale' dash down the left set up a superb attacking platform five metres from the line.

But a poor Max Branning pass and Janine Butcher's snatched attempt at taking it killed the opportunity.

Having lost centre “Dirty” Den Watts , replaced by Grant Mitchell, to injury in the opening period, veteran lock Pat Butcher departed after Current Eastenders' early attack came to nothing.

If that was a boost, what followed lifted Current Eastenders hopes to pre-match levels.

Dot Cottons charge into the heart of the defence set up a ruck from which Max Branning sent Walford-born number eight Janine Butcher over for try confirmed by the video referee.

As befitted the reigning champions, they took the game back to Current Eastenders, drawing another penalty from Kat Moon.

But the Old Eastenders spurned the penalty shot at goal, instead launching an attack from a line-out that took them back into the lead only 11 minutes after Janine Butcher's score.

Wellard, on as a replacement for Carol Jackson, finished off the gamble with an unopposed burst through what remained of the Current Eastenders defence and Ethel Skinner added the conversion to put them a point ahead.

Current Eastenders' response was equally impressive in its construction, but ended with Alfie Moon Butchering his drop-goal attempt from in front of the posts.

Moments later Wellard conceded a penalty for holding on after the Old Eastenders tried to counter-attack from Alfie Moon's superb touch-finder.

But from a wide angle, Bianca Butcher could not hit the mark and when Kat Moon was caught on the margins of offside from a scrum, the Old Eastenders opted for the line-out and ground out the final minutes to secure victory.

Beaufort Juniors copied their senior counterparts with a big win to open their season. .They conjured up 10 tries in a match that started badly for them. Within a minute of the kick off they shaken by an Abertillery touch down but regained their composure to eventually run in 10 tries for a comfortable win. Aaron Boulter got a hat trick, Ieuan Jones notched up a brace while Joel Harries, Tom Morgan and Owain Preece all grabbed a try apiece Ryan Hale in form with the boot kicked 7 conversions and Morgan Woodland one It was a good start for the juniors with man of the match Ieuan Jones having a particularly good game with his line breaks and support play . Next week the team heads off to Caerphilly.

Beaufort got off to a flying start to their season with a13 try blitz of Forgeside. They were manifestly superior in all departments of the game making it a long afternoon for their opponents. The primary agents of the visitors agony was their set piece which was completely demolished by the opposition rendering them bereft of any decent possession. Beaufort also displayed a disciplined structure executed with a good deal of exuberance and vibrancy which will be needed in what promises to be a hard season.

The game was effectively over as a contest on the half hour when the fourth and bonus point try was scored. Thereafter the game was played with non contested scrums. Unhappily for the visitors there was to be no respite as they struggled to stem the tide and were eventually put to the sword with clinical precision. Jason Taylor, Lee Roper and Lewis Hodson all bagged a brace of tries a piece with Andrew Morgan, Mark Heasely, Geraint Phillips, Matthew Burrows, Kyle Purnell, Justin Bennett and Chris Morris all making touchdowns. Darrel Roper notched up 18 points from 9 conversions and Morris converted his own try. It was Beaufort's biggest win in a league match but they should not get carried away . There were too many turnovers to regard the performance as faultless . This will need to be addressed against stiffer opposition.

The star performer on the day was Jason Taylor who has lost none of his competitiveness in making what was his 404th appearance in the Beaufort colours

Beaufort brought their season to an end with a thumping victory against their closet league rivals . They already had the league title in the bag when Cefn Fforest failed to gain a bonus point last week against Cwm It was a decisive win and sweet revenge for the championship winners against the only league team to beat them this season

The match though proved to be a one sided affair. Cefn Fforest displayed their traditional combative edge but they lacked continuity and were guilty for not releasing what looked like a useful back line. Beaufort had more ambition in their game although on occasions there was a careless inaccuracy in their play . But it was not exposed and they did score six tries crafted from an impressive line out and a solid scrum .

Dylan Smith kicked them into a 6 point lead through two penalties in the first ten minutes before Beaufort were able to crack open the visitors defence . Mike Vaughan finished off a passage of play following a freakish bounce and from a good line out and drive No 8 Paul Francis made Beaufort second touch down for an 18 point lead without reply. . Cefn Fforest then had their best period in the latter stages of the first half but despite having enough possession from a bigger pack they failed to dent the Beaufort defence.

After the break the visitors struggled for parity in the set pieces and eventually called for uncontested scrums. It made little difference as a determined Beaufort cut loose to finish off their opponents . Dan Purchase got a third try and replacement flanker Andrew Morgan crashed his way over for a fourth try . Second row Jack Dobbs won the foot race over the last thirty meters to score under the posts for his first try for the club. Centre Mike Vaughan finished off Beaufort's try tally with his seventeenth try of the season which with Smith 16 point haul from his boot took the scoreline beyond the 40 point barrier. There was though some consolation for Cefn Fforest. All too late they used they unleashed a counterattack and slick handling and a deceptively quick winger outstripped the Beaufort cover to score under the post right at the end of the encounter

After the match the Division 6 East trophy was presented to Beaufort's captain Dylan Smith by Mr Ken Hewett Vice Chairman of the WRU

Beaufort total points tally for the league and friendlies this season was 695 points against 256 points conceded scoring 95 tries from 25 matches. Centre Mike Vaughan was the top try scorer with 17 tries and Dylan Smith clocked up 176 points with the boot

Cefn Forest No Show

The Division 6 East championship decider between Beaufort and Cefn Fforest last weekend proved to be a non starter when Cefn Fforest cried off less than an hour before the kick off. This was the third time this season Beaufort had suffered the fate of a last minute league fixture cancellation at home . Club officials were naturally very disappointed and left to explain to sponsors, guests and loyal supporters that their closest rivals had been unable to raise a team for the big match. Fitting in a game before the season ends now provides Beaufort with a headache. Cefn Fforest are already committed to playing one more fixture against Cwm next Saturday and even if the situation at their club improves Beaufort will have the additonal problem of finding a venue now that the cricket season is underway and takes priority over ground allocation

Beaufort's mid week fixture against Cwm earned them maximum points from 6 tries against one conceded . They took their chances in regal style but did suffer a crisis in the second quarter when they were heavily penalised.

After 5 minutes, plenty of pace and slick handling released centre Mike Vaughan for the first of his two tries . Prop Justin Roberts got the next following a good line out take and drive. But Cwm grabbed one back with their pick up and drive game crafted from a tapped penalty

Then the sublime attacking skills of Michael White, playing in the No. 15 shirt, produced the best try of the match. Centres Phillips and Vaughan made enough space for him to step his way around the cover defence for a 50 meter try under the sticks . Darrel Roper converted for a 17 point to 5 lead at the end of the first quarter

But then a series of infringements mostly at the breakdown cost the home side dearly. Cwm took every chance to kick at goal and succeeded with 3 attempts to narrow the gap to within 3 points. They clearly had the league leaders rattled and it was not until the second half that they got themselves back together.

Afterwards a whole barrage of attacks at pace from the host side finally silenced their opponents Three quarters Vaughan, Kyle Purnell and Matthew Burrows taking the final passes to score three further tries with Roper and White converting one apiece to make it a comfortable win

Beaufort youngsters ended the season with a loss but can take credit from their final performance against an outfit that had taken the scalp of some quality teams during the year . Machen did outscore them 8 tries to 4 after leading at half time 38 points to 5. But after the interval the home side fought back with Ieuan Jones , Tom Williams , Tom Morgan and Joel Harris getting touchdowns. Chelsea Preece , the second girl to represent the club had a fine match and notched over a conversion . Beaufort coaches were delighted with their first years showing and now with an established squad of 25 players look forward to next season .On Saturday they hold their annual awards evening at the clubhouse.

Struggling Aberbeeg plagued with injuries and dwindling player numbers at the end of their season, were savaged by top of the table Beaufort still smarting from lasts weeks home draw against Trefil. Despite being understrength, to their great credit Aberbeeg fulfilled the fixture but their hosts sunk them in ruthless fashion with a blitz of 11 tries in all. There appeared to be no safe haven for the visitors as their hosts attacked remorselessly from all corners of the pitch . Nine Beaufort players shared the spoils from the try haul making it the highest score recorded by Beaufort this season

Beaufort centres Mike Vaughan and Geraint Phillips were never far from the action but Beaufort's star man on the day was fullback Kyle Purnell

The chase for the league title is still in the balance . Beaufort have two matches to play A mid week home encounter against Cwm and Saturday's last game against closest rivals Cefn Fforest to be played at Cae Canol

It was thrilling end to this rearranged league fixture between these two arch rivals. Having beaten Trefil away earlier in the season Beaufort looked favourites to secure a double and keep alive their challenge for the league title. It certainly looked that way for three quarters of the match but the home side lost its way in the last quarter . Trefil finished the game in a flourish and might have snatched what seemed an improbable win.

From the kick off Beaufort had Trefil frantically defending their line but a stray pass allowed the visitors to counterattack and from the breakdown Trefil kicked the first of their three first half penalties. Beaufort got one of their own before they scored their first try. Stuart Francis took a clean catch at the line out and from 20 metres Beaufort drove for the line with Ben Harding emerging from a rampant pack to make the touch down .

The second try again came from good line out work . This time scrum half Matthew Burrows was the beneficiary which allowed him to slip his markers to race through for the next score for Dylan Smith to improve with the conversion . Unfortunately, Burrows who was having a fine match had to leave the field through injury as did flanker Jason Taylor which was the start of Beaufort misfortunes

Despite playing mostly on the defensive Trefil refused to buckle under the pressure and managed to keep a fingertip control on the scoreline . They took every opportunity to kick for goal and at half time were chasing a lead of 18 points to 9.

Beaufort restarted the second well and with Smith kicking a drop goal Beaufort stretched this lead further. Then from a tapped penalty Michael White out paced the cover defence to score what seemed to be a good try only for the referee to declare the centre had stepped over the dead ball line. From then on in things started to unravel for the home side . They found themselves heavily penalised giving away possession and surrendering good field position . The visitors also made a tactical change by bringing on veteran and club coach Medlicott and he gave his team a much needed lift to redress Beaufort's dominance

Their cause was helped further within the last quarter when a Beaufort player was given a yellow card, the only one in the match . Trefil now saw a window of opportunity and they made Beaufort pay dearly. A series of penalties awarded by the referrer kept Beaufort desperately defending their territory. Eventually superiority in numbers gave Trefil the breakthrough with a well worked try. . They followed it up with another in a pulsating last five minutes of play as Beaufort failed to rally and keep cool heads. The conversion drew the score level just before the final whistle to end an enthralling encounter.

Beaufort will not be happy with the way they ended this match. They had the lion share of possession and should have nailed victory in the first half . Trefil will be content with a draw and in knowledge they have dented Beaufort chances of the league title.

Beaufort suffered their first league defeat of the season and looked a team that had not played for a month. Foul weather and the heavy ground were mitigating against playing any sort of attacking rugby. The home side coped much better, kept to a simple game plan and were worthy winners. They kicked with wisdom and played on Beaufort 's errors of which there were many.

The home team got off to a flying start. Beaufort failed to clear their lines and Cefn Fforest took advantage to drive to the line and score under the posts. Beaufort were still seeking to find their rhythm to unlock the home side defence when they offended again at the breakdown This time the penalty was within easy kicking distance that gave the host team a lead of ten unanswered points on halftime.

With the weather worsening there was a wearying inevitability about the outcome of the contest. Beaufort found themselves in unfamiliar territory having to tailor their game to meet with these conditions . This they struggled to do and with with a slippery ball proving a difficult opponent, it cruelly exposed them just short of the hour. A speculative kick out of defence proved uncontrollable for the Beaufort fullback and Cefn Fforest wing race in to dribble the ball to the line for an improbable try

Chasing a 15 point deficit the visitors tried to get something out of the match . But their opponents high box kicks in the conditions were giving them problems and by contrast Beaufort's kicking game was much less effective. But there were some decent attempts from centres Michael White and Michael Vaughan to redress matters but the support just couldn't nail the chances . Substitute forward Stuart Francis made a marked impression when he came on and in the last quarter of play Cefn Fforest were under the cosh.

Having infringed too many times on their line the referee awarded Beaufort a penalty try which Dylan Smith converted . With seconds left on the game clock the home side infringed again and Smith kicked the penalty for a consolation losing bonus point

It was a disappointing result for Beaufort against a much more experienced home side that were completely focused on a game plan that suited the conditions. Stuart Francis had a good match but Beaufort's star man on the day was Matthew Burrows for an outstanding performance at fullback and later at scrum half

Beaufort youngsters have yet to notch up their first win. In fairness they came up against a well organised outfit that had seven Dragon players in their line up and it showed in a classy performance, however, the team spirit in the Beaufort camp after just five matches is excellent . There was no doubting the committment and effort from their first year together in this match and there were some impressive performance from individuals This week Daffyd Watkins stood out. What they have to achieve is to play more as a team but the coaches are confident this is not too far away

Newly formed Beaufort youngsters are still searching for their first win and lost heavily against the best outfit they have so far encountered .Croesceiliog proved to be a well drilled outfit and did the damage in the first half which they dominated.

However, Beaufort had a much better second half and despite the limited games they have to date played the signs are there that they are beginning to gel together and play more as a team . Daffyd Watkins had a storming match for the home side while Ieaun Jones had a most promising debut.

BEAUFORT RFC UNDER TWELVES

From a fledgling beginning Beaufort under Twelve section has started to so show much promise . With kit and equipment funded by a Communities First Grant the under twelves are developing under the watch full eyes of club stalwarts Robert Hale and Stuart Nash, level 2 and I rugby coaches and in first aid.

Since getting together in September of last year the squad has strengthened in size to 22 players. Many had never played rugby before but have taken on the established outfits of Abercynon, Beddwas, Nelson and last weekend Newbridge. . They lost the encounter 39 points to 7 . But there were some eye catching performances from Joel Harries and Tom Jones who scored Beaufort's only try which Ryan Hale converted. Participating in the match was Chelsea Preece who became the first girl in the history of Beaufort RFC to appear in a Beaufort team. The squad trains on Wednesdays 5.30 pm to 7.00pm at the Beaufort RFC ground. A warm welcome will be offered to all newcomers.

Beaufort notched up their eleventh league win of the season to keep them in top spot and undefeated . Markham were unable to match the sheer exuberance and fast flowing nature of the visitors who ran in six well orchestrated tries . They were in control for most of the match keeping Markham perpetually on the brink of the last tackle unable to achieve any momentum for long periods.

The damage was done in the set piece and as a result of a driving scrum flanker Andrew Morgan had plenty of room to keep the opposition defence interested all afternoon. He made two touchdowns in the first half with Dylan Smith kicking a penalty, two conversions and a drop goal for a comfortable 21 point to 3 lead at the interval.

Following the break dogged determination by the host team got them a try after a loose kick allowed them superiority in numbers out wide . Beaufort's response was immediate and clinical. Slick handling at pace out flanked their opponents and lock Stuart Francis having a superb match took the final pass to drive over for Beaufort' s third try. Two more followed in a destructive ten minute spell for the bonus point. Centre Mike Vaughan tore through the defence for the forth try and a lightening break from the base of the scrum by Matthew Burrows made it five taking the score beyond the forty point barrier

Markham could well have folded but they showed great spirit and surprised Beaufort with a late second try . But Beaufort had the final say when Morgan ran thirty metres unchallenged to bag the sixth for his hat trick.

It was a solid performance from the league leaders. Dylan Smith kicked 19 points and the back row trio of Andy Hill, Dan Purchase and Andrew Morgan were quite outstanding with Morgan getting the nod as Beaufort's star man on the day

This was an exciting league encounter full of commitment and electricity the outcome of which was in doubt until the dying moments of the match . Beaten earlier in the season Abertysswg were determined to get their revenge in the return fixture and nearly succeeded . With ten minutes left they wiped out a first half deficit of 8 points to grab the lead only to lose it again within minutes of the end

Beaufort started well enough . Territorially they were in control but met an impressive defence which was the best they had encountered all season . Beaufort were able to set up a solid attacking platform but their ploy to outflank the defence by long passes foundered as passes were either spilled or missed the target altogether to roll harmlessly into touch

After thirty minutes Dylan Smith kicked a penalty to edge Beaufort into the lead and before the interval centre Michael White broke the mid field deadlock to muscle his way over courtesy of a driving scrum. It was the only try of the match.

Abertysswg remained undaunted and in the third quarter had their best period of play . Their most portent weapon was their place kicker who made Beaufort pay for their indiscretions. He kicked three tricky penalties superbly from wide angles, narrowly missing a fourth. Buoyed up and urged on by a very vocal home crowd Abertysswg third penalty earned them the lead . But it proved to be the wake up call Beaufort needed and they showed great test of character to retrieve the situation.

Under pressure the home side infringed and Smith slotted over his second penalty to restore the lead.

With the end in sight Beaufort kept control and an impression touchline drive of over thirty metres brought them to the try line. It took an herculean effort from the home side pack to keep Beaufort from scoring but the damage was done and they failed to escape the stranglehold. Beaufort then ran the game clock down to enjoy a huge sigh of relief at the final whistle.

Beaufort's Lee Roper had a good match on the wing as did second row Mark Heasley but the team's star player on the day who caught eye was hooker Michael West having put in his best performance of the season

Beaufort Under 12's vs Bedwas

Beaufort under 12s distinguished themselves without winning by a spirited performance that saw them lose only their second match together as a unit in the last quarter of play. Both teams scored four tries apiece in a thrilling encounter but Bedwas edged victory with a better conversion count. Forward Thomas Jones bagged two tries and popped over a conversion with Joel Harris and Thomas Williams getting a try apiece . It was though a fine team effort with captain Daffydd Watkins leading the team by example . Fellow forwards Williams , Smith, Watkins, Barnes and backs Pool, Nash , Bayliss , Powell and Jukes were all prominent in the exchanges.

Beaufort raced in six tries in this friendly encounter with just one conceded. Wing Scott Griffiths got the visitors off to a good start with an early try and a further three came before halftime from flanker Jason Taylor , fullback Matthew Burrows and second row Stuart Francis. Garndiffaith got one back but trailed 20 points to 7 at the break.

Beaufort made a few positional changes and brought on all their replacements after the interval and scored two more tries . Centre Mike White made his usual contribution in the exchanges and was rewarded with a fifth touchdown and replacement wing Simon Rees wrapped up a satisfying afternoon for the visitors with the last try

Having given one of his best performances of the season Stuart Francis deservedly was deemed Beaufort's star player on the day

Beaufort overwhelmed Forgeside in this league encounter in an eight try bonanza with talisman Paul Francis bagging four.

It was though a slow start by the home side but after ten minutes of indifferent play they started to get some urgency into the exchanges. They then crushed the opposition up front establishing a sold platform to launch some blistering attacks. Second row Ben Harding got the first try in a repeat performance of his first try last week. Prop Lee Morgan drove over for a second and scrum half John Davies got a third, all courtesy of a dominant pack showing commitment and real intensity. By half time Beaufort had sailed into a 17 points lead and looked good for a lot more.

Sadly Forgeside could give little in return. Their fullback did threaten occasionally and might have caused real problems to the home side by his speed and deceptive running had he been involved more . However, in general they did not distinguish themselves but did steal a try mid way into the second half when they intercepted a pass to scamper in at the posts.

By this time Beaufort had the match won from a further 2 tries to secure a bonus point . Paul Francis got the first of these but the second was a gem . Matthew Burrows superb forty yard break from the base of the scrum allowed his flanker , the omnipresent Dan Purchase , to take a final pass to dash in under the posts. Thereafter, it became the Paul Francis show as he rounded things off with three further tries taking the score, with Dylan Smith's conversions over the forty point mark.

This was a good performance by the home team that needed much match practice to keep them top of the league to maintain the points differential from their closest rivals. For his dual contribution first at fullback and then later as a replacement scrumhalf Matthew Burrows edged the Beaufort star player award

Beaufort are hoping for a game this coming weekend with an early cut off because of the start of Six Nation Internationals

Before the kick off players ,officials and supporters from both sides stood in silence for one minute as a mark of respect for Beaufort's former player John O' Leary who had died suddenly at his Newcastle home over Xmas holiday. John who was 46 and had played prop for the Club during the nineties before moving up north

Beaufort got off to the best possible start scoring a try minutes after the kick off. They got themselves into good field position and from a scrummage Paul Francis took the ball within metres of the line to set up a move for lock Ben Harding who burst through the defence for the touch down. .

Sadly, nothing resembling this momentum surfaced again until late in the first half. Beaufort tried to force the game and end it in a flourish but too many infringements and series of penalties sustained by both sides made play less than inspiring. Much of the problem seem to lay at the breakdown which was a mess throughout and something of a lottery

Beaufort did get themselves back together and in some sort of shape to score a second try which was the best of the contest With the advantage of an Aberbargoed player in the sin bin Hooker Stuart Lee started the movement which allowed centre Michael White to make a trade mark run down the right flank. His wing man Kyle Pernell took a perfect pass to race in over the line. . Dylan Smith added the conversion for a half time lead of 12 points without reply.

Smith kicked a penalty after the break before a Beaufort player had a yellow card With superiority in numbers Aberbargoed then had their best period but lacked the incisiveness to breach a solid Beaufort defence. When a score did come it was at the opposite end of the field from Smith's boot which stretched the Beaufort lead to 18 points.

However, Aberbargoed made strident efforts in a last gasp attempt to get on the score sheet . In injury time they stole a try when Beaufort fumbled the ball at the base of a five metre scrum which was improved by the conversion.

Beaufort star man on the day was flanker Daniel Purchase. Next week Beaufort play hosts to Blaenavon Forgeside for another league encounter.

Beaufort Vs Bethesda

Beaufort's hope of a fourth round tie in the SWALEC bowl came to an abrupt end when they were defeated by the North Walian second division opponents in the dying moments of play. Bethesda top of their league table got off to the better start kicking an early penalty and served notice that they were not going to surrender their unbeaten playing record easily.

Beaufort then settled down and after a good passage of play got the first try. Second row Ben Harding's take at the line out secured the attacking platform for his three quarters to strike and centre Geraint Phillips burst through to touch down under the posts. Dylan Smith kicked the easiest of conversions and before half time kicked two penalties from three attempts to put the home side into a comfortable lead of 13 points to 3.

But the lead did not sit easy with Beaufort, particularly in the second half . In a disastrous ten minute spell they allowed the visitors to come back into the match. They failed to kick with distance out of their own heartland and made a couple of unforced errors to allow Bethesda to take up the initiative. Eventually, the opposition found the opening they were working hard to achieve and ran in a well executed try from 30 metres. The conversion brought them within 3 points of the lead

However, Beaufort did rally and superiority in numbers due to a yellow card against Bethesda led to a thrilling last quarter. Beaufort kicked the corners to keep the game tight and with a slender lead looked good to see the match out But less than 6 minutes left on the game clock they unwisely worked the ball wide and lost control in mid field . Bethesda broke away to stun Beaufort with a late try scored under the sticks. It was a sucker blow from where there was no return

Tactically this was not one of Beaufort's best displays. They occasionally looked dangerous in attack but were called upon to defend all too often because of poor options and sloppy handling . Flanker Paul Francis did catch the eye and had a fine match but Beaufort's star performer on the day was second row Ben Harding

Next week Beaufort return to league duty with a an away game at Markham

An injury ravaged Beaufort couldn't compete against a strong wind in Brynbach Park. Although the team were poorly kitted out in jeans, shoes with some sharing clubs they cobbled together a team of champions.

Indeed it was a wonder to many, considering the number of people who were injured, mentally and sexually (one brave chap played with half a finger). A couple of neghbouring clubs said that on no account that Beaufort would have their golf day there. The team only managed to put out a side by bringing in some former players (Dai Leyshon and John Kibby and Darth Vader) who played out of their comfort zone to win the competition. Craig Bennet captained the team for the first time and he and brother Justin had a good game as did Glyn Moon and Gogger (pictured here with Johnny Rotten).

Even though they were beaten spirits, were high and everyone is sure when the massive lack coordination clears up, Beaufort will undoubtedly have player in contention for Celtic Manor's Ryder Cup.

This second tie of the Swalec Bowl Challenge proved to be a thrilling encounter . Beaufort had something to prove after being knocked out of the Welsh District cup last year by their mid Walian counterpart from Division Six Central..The exuberance and fast flowing nature of the play from both teams superbly handled by the match official made it the best game seen at the home venue for some time.

Beaufort got into the lead from a Dylan Smith penalty but then Llandrindod struck back with an early try and had the better of the first segment of play. Beaufort then found their rhythm and unleashed a barrage of attacks then resulted in two touchdowns. Centre Mike Vaughan got the first and scrum half Matthew Burrows cut the gap for a second . Both sides exchanged penalties and Beaufort ended the first half 20 points to 8 in front

The home side needed only three minutes to extend their lead from a penalty kicked by stand off Smith who was having a fine match. However the visitors were making strident efforts to get control of the game. They were a bigger side with a powerful back row that did cause Beaufort real anxiety in the loose. From a tapped penalty they burst through the Beaufort defence to score their second try but missed a simple conversion to shorten the lead to 23 points to 13.

But Llandrindod failed to dominate the home side in the scrum where Beaufort had a telling edge that was to serve them well throughout the encounter. A wonderful accomplished passage of play followed from Beaufort that silenced their opponents efforts to retrieve the match. Prop Lee Morgan crashed over for Beaufort's next try and some quality handling led eventually to a fourth try scored by centre Geraint Phillips Their opponent's replied with a try of their own crafted again by their tireless back row but it was to be their last gasp effort.

Smith killed off the challenge with another penalty to take the score to the forty point mark and wing Matthew Dobbs followed up a chip behind the defence to score in the corner with Smith adding the extra points from a touchline conversion.

CWM Match Report

CWM RFC 6 POINTS BEAUFORT RFC 40 POINTS

This was a game shaped by the conditions with handling errors galore as both sides struggled to cope with the blustery conditions and greasy ball. Beaufort as league leaders had come as favourites but they quickly found out Cwm were a determined outfit and put up a spirited display which could have upset the form book. It wasn't until the second half that the game eventually slipped away from them as their defence leaked 5 of the 6 tries scored.

It was though a scrappy first half. There was little continuity in Beaufort's play not helped by a worrying number of penalties they gave away. They did score the only try in the first half when scrumhalf Matthew Burrows took advantage of a good scrum to unravel the defence. Dylan Smith kicked two penalties and Cwm kicked two of their own giving Beaufort an 11 point to 6 lead to end a lack lustre first half .

After the break Beaufort finally got some electricity into their game . They created enough space for their ball carriers to make deep insertions into the Cwm heartland from where

they crafted their tries. Burrows pounced for a second try after a defencive slip up. He was involved in the next finished off by second row Ben Harding . It was Harding who crashed through the defence from a tapped penalty for a fourth which topped a superb display from him to be named Beaufort's star play on the day. Smith converted to give Beaufort a commanding lead of 28 points to 6.

To their credit Cwm kept attacking Beaufort at every opportunity refusing to submit,but for all this good endeavour they lacked the incisiveness to penetrate their visitors defence. By contrast, Beaufort did and demonstrated this with clinical precision in the last quarter . Quick hands and plenty of pace left wing Lee Roper enough room to round the last remnants of cover to finish off a attack which began from a deep position. This was followed by a trademark try from the season's leading try scorer Mike Vaughan who was the beneficiary of an explosive burst from flanker Justin Bennett . This took the score to the 40 point mark and ended the contest.

Next week Beaufort are at home to Llandrindod Wells in the second round of the Magners Bowl. Kick off at the earlier time of 2 pm.

Aberbeeg Match Report

Beaufort celebrated a fifth league win scoring six tries earning a bonus point to keep them top of Division 6 East

A Dylan Smith penalty got them off to an early start and in the first quarter they notched up two sparkling tries from centres Mike Vaughan and Geraint Phillips . Smith added the conversions for a 17 point lead and Beaufort looked to be winning this match at a canter

But the home side who have struggled so far this season were a better outfit than their lowly league position implied. They had a good line out, kicked well for field position and on occasions their driving maul did cause problems for the visitors. However when the ball was spread wide Beaufort had too much pace and skill . Wing Lee Roper latched on to the final pass of a fine passage of play for the first of his two tries, superbly converted again by Smith to give the visitors a 24 point lead without reply at the interval

The bonus try came five minutes into the restart scored by the irrepressible Jason Taylor who had a fine match leaving Smith a simple conversion.With the match now won Beaufort's momentum fell away . They also had a player sent off and sensing an opportunity to make superiority in numbers tell, Aberbeeg raised their game giving Beaufort ten minutes of real anxiety . Although they recycled the ball endlessly they just couldn't create enough space to cross the line finding Beaufort's tenacious defence rock solid.

Beaufort finally broke out of the stranglehold and finished the match in a flourish. After a lightening counterattack Lee Roper made a fifth touch down in the corner and second row Ben Harding thundered across the try line for Beaufort's sixth

The Chico Interview

The Chico Story

A few years ago Beaufort RFC's goodwill ambassador, Huw Lewis, was on a fact finding mission in the slums of Peru.

There he found a young rabid Chico dancing for money. After looking into his doleful eyes those big heart strings were pulled and he brought him back to the loving fold of Beaufort RFC. The combination of dressing like gigolo from Miami Vice and a steady diet of drinking alcohol through a funnel soon nursed the lovable little chap back to health.

After training hard he made his way into the Beaufort Senior team on the 27th September 2009. His running like an asthmatic greyhound was deceptive, the effort of charging down balls with his face was paid off with a fine try and rightly deserved man of the match award.

Well done Chico, we Love you man.

Blaenavon Match Report

BLAENAVON FORGESIDE RFC 7 POINTS BEAUFORT RFC 37 POINTS

It was a solid performance from Beaufort in this division 6 encounter to make up for last weeks disappointing draw at home. Their discipline was better and they scored six well constructed tries to earn themselves the bonus point to keep them in touch with the league leaders.

A penalty from standoff Dylan Smith got them off to an early start. Then before the half hour mark they had scored two tries. In his match debut wing Matthew Dobbs made the decisive touchline run that led to the first. Centre Mike Vaughan finished clinically to score the try. The second , the best of the encounter ,came after a fine take in the line out by Mark Heasley. A mid field switch straight out of the text book created the gap for centre Michael White to fly up the middle of the park to gallop in near the posts

Before the interval Beaufort had struck again Quick thinking by scrum half John Davies set up Mike Vaughan for him to skip across the line for his second try . With two conversions from Smith by half time Beaufort had scored 22 unanswered points.

Smith was again on target with a penalty to open the visitors tally after the break. But once again Beaufort seemed to lose their first half momentum not helped by a number of stoppages .Forgeside then had their best period and it took an herculean effort by Matthew Burrows to bring off a cover tackle to stop a certain try . But the home side persevered and with dogged determination played the phases that led to their only try . It was though their last gasp effort . Beaufort silenced their opponents almost immediately with pace and deft passing . Matthew Dobbs deservedly got the fourth try for the bonus point and White finished off a good afternoon for him with a fifth which Smith converted

It was good match for Smith who controlled the match superbly at standoff and a satisfying one for prop Marcus Rose to get onto the field back after a long term injury. On his club debut Matthew Dobbs was Beaufort's star player

A Messy Night Up Beaufort (As if that out of the ordinary!)

Please forgive my abandonment of the Blog of late. I found the non playing very difficult and adjusting to being a "bag man" hard.

The ole bonkleg is back. Anyway it was a messy night by any standard:

Sam made his Beaufort Debut. The Baldy Peachaven winger gave his heart but due to MiracleGro shower gel blonde flowing locks came forth and left the boy in a severe state of intoxication.

After an afternoon of disappointment the Sacred Haven of the Country's Finest Young Minds that is Beaufort RFC fell foul to an invasion of magical and mythological characters. They were summoned up by black magic otherwise known as ZIP BOING

This caused Supergirl (who must of been undergoing treatment) and a Smurf (who was on the tubby side) to vomit.

Anyways I like Cheese so who cares.

Aberbargoed Match Report

BEAUFORT RFC 26 POINTS ABERBARGOED 26 POINTS

Beaufort thought they had this match sown up by half time scoring 4 tries but a desperately disappointing performance in the second half allowed Aberbargoed to claw their way back to draw this Division Six encounter

Despite having the lion share of the possession silly acts of indiscipline were the host's downfall and in the end they had to be content with two league points and not five.

The visitors took every opportunity to kick their penalties converting four in all, two in the first ten minutes of the start of the match, to take the lead . Beaufort then unleashed a volley of attacks and tries came thick and fast. Flanker Daniel Purchase got the first and excellent finishing brought a further three tries scored by second row Ben Harding and flankers Andrew Morgan and Paul Francis . Dylan Smith converted three for a comfortable lead of 26 points to 9

But after the interval nothing resembling this momentum surfaced again. Although they were in complete control of the set pieces they failed to nail a hat full of opportunities that came their way due to some very sloppy and indifferent play . Aberbargoed, with only scraps of possession to play with, made the most of the few chances that came their way

and shored up their defence

In an horrendous last ten minutes spell the home side completely lost concentration, mistakenly thinking the match was won. To their credit Aberbargoed kept their composure throughout and caught Beaufort out with two lethal counterattacks from deep positions to make two late touchdowns . The simple conversions brought them within three points of the lead. When cool heads were needed to see the game out Beaufort tried to end the match with a flourish but again fell foul of the referee who awarded Aberbargoed a penalty. The visitors gratefully accepted it and kicked superbly to draw the scores level to end the contest,

Beaufort cannot be pleased with this result nor the penalty count which weighed heavily against them . In a team of mostly young players it was stalwart Paul Francis who caught the eye and was the team's star player on the day.

Beaufort V Trefil Match Report

TREFIL RFC 10 POINTS BEAUFORT RFC 19 POINTS

Beaufort couldn't quite match last week's scintillating performance but they did enough to dispatch Trefil for a second league win scoring three tries .

Trefil gave Beaufort a torrid time in the opening quarter . They took full advantage of the visitors indiscipline with a series of penalties that kept them on the offensive . They kicked one penalty and placed another within a metre of the Beaufort line from where they drove from the lineout to crash over for a try.

Matters got worse for visitors when they had a player sent to the sin bin

But Trefil failed to make this tell . The ten point lead did not sit easy with them and in the second quarter they noticeably wilted in the heat . The momentum of the match then swung in favour of a fitter Beaufort. The visitors had a try disallowed but then failed woefully to nail other chances due to some sloppy handling to end the first half without a score.

Beaufort finally found their touch in the second half . Within five minutes, following a good scrumage, centre Mike Vaughan weaved his way through the defence to touch down at the posts leaving Dylan Smith the easiest of conversions . The next try was conjured up from half way and was the best of the encounter. Slick handling at pace provided space on the flank and fullback Matthew Burrows latched on to the final pass to round the opposition for a touchdown The conversion failed but Beaufort had grabbed the lead 12 points to 10.

Trefil did try to rally but they lacked enough incisiveness to endanger a splendid Beaufort defence. They also suffered a crisis in the scrum where Beaufort had the bigger bite on the day and occasionally struggled to cope with the pace of the game

With five minutes left on the game clock Michael White put the result beyond doubt. The Beaufort fly half pounced onto a loose ball near a ruck and began a thirty meter dash for the try line leaving a hapless Trefil defence trailing in his wake.

It was another a good team performance by Beaufort particularly in the second half. Newly partnered half backs Smith and White had a good afternoon . CRICKHOWELL RFC 6 POINTS BEAUFORT RFC 25 POINTS

Beaufort finished their league programme on a high note with a comfortable win against the Powys side who defeated them at home early in the season. They finish third in the league table and improved their mid table standing from last season

Crickhowell had a good start keeping Beaufort in check for the first quarter of the match but then Beaufort found the measure of their opponents to break out and put pressure on the home side . Dylan Smith who had an excellent match kicked four first half penalties to put Beaufort in control although the visitors were guilty in not making the most of nailing several try scoring opportunities.

Crickhowell did kick a penalty of their own to end the first half 12 points to 3. They started the second half as they did the first and earned themselves a second penalty but were up against a strong Beaufort scrum that was denying them any quality possession. This was a key feature in this match as they were driven backwards alarmingly and why Beaufort's front row of Harding , Moon and Roberts as a unit justly earned themselves the star player accolade

Smith kicked another penalty before the Beaufort three quarters cut loose benefiting from a solid attacking platform and some thunderous runs from flanker Jason Taylor who also had a fine match Centre Geraint Phillips drove his way over for the first try and wing Lee Roper raced in for a second after a superb break by the Beaufort stand off to end the encounter.

ST JULIANS HSOB ( NEWPORT) RFC 18 POINTS BEAUFORT 33 POINTS

Beaufort took maximum points in their penultimate league fixture of the season but their route to victory was not an easy one and the outcome was far from certain until the last quarter . Beaufort encountered problems with home side's jumbo pack and for long periods were starved of any quality possession but they sensed the lack of ambition in their opponents attack and eventually fed on it to bring them five tries.

St Julians relied heavily on their stand off and he had a good afternoon with the boot kicking in all six penalties from eight attempts. He kicked two penalties to give St Julians the lead but the real electricity in this often scrappy encounter came from the Beaufort three quarters . When they were unleashed they looked unstoppable and after twenty minutes they crafted out the first try Geraint Phillips cut the gap in text book fashion to score under the posts and Dylan's Smith conversion edged the team in front .

But two further successful penalties by St Julians before the interval restored the lead to 12 points to 7

A down wind recovery after the break by Beaufort grabbed the lead back with two sparkling tries from centre Mike Vaughan . But again St Julians banged over two further penalties to cut the deficit to 19 points to 18. This was to be their last gasp challenge . For the last quarter Beaufort cut loose with some blistering attacks from their back line and in particular fullback Matthew Burrows who was Beaufort's star player on the day

A superb solo effort from Phillips brought him his second try and he was the beneficiary of another pacey attack for his third and Beaufort 's fifth touchdown of the afternoon to give Beaufort a winning bonus point

Next week Beaufort will play their final match of their league campaign which is a rearranged fixture away against Crickhowell.

I am here rambling, on my third glass of welsh champagne, trawling through the Web to make sure that Sam Sugrue has his sunday post dinner entertainment. Firstly I found a video from last years Beaufort Barbeque anywayI digress.

Todays game was a win with a bonus point, I felt personally I played like a donkey with one rollerskate on his back hoof though Alex McCarthy was absolutlely delightful, as was Bash, and Danny Carey.

Though after the match the Beaufort "drinking" did have a whiff of minge about it

Geoff Harding and Sam Sugrue (seen here in the annual dinner 1987) would have something to say about it.

Blackwood Stars Match Report

BEAUFORT RFC 10 POINTS BLACKWOOD STARS 24 POINTS

It was a gallant effort from Beaufort in this last home fixture of the season but they were unable to recover the points deficit after an explosive opening first quarter from the top of the league contenders. In the opening exchanges Beaufort were simply unable to achieve any kind of momentum falling foul of the referee's whistle in which they conceded 8 penalties in 15minutes and 13 in highly charged up first half .

With clinical precious Blackwood punished Beaufort kicking for good field position . Then from a whole volley of attacks at close range they clobbered the home side with two tries and a 14 point lead.

Beaufort did regain some composure after Dylan Smith kicked a penalty but before the first half ended Blackwood crossed the line again for a highly contentious third try when Beaufort claimed the player was in touch . But the lineman's flag stayed down and what was a pivotal score, stood.

Beaufort found a new resolve in the second half and they had much the better of the exchanges. They were able to establish a bridgehead to launch a wave of attacks from their where their try was crafted .

From good possession Matthew Burrows's turned the defence inside out with his side steps to scuttle over between the uprights to reduce the lead 19 points to 10 . It was the fillip that Beaufort needed . Having their best period of the encounter they destroyed the Blackwood scrum . Sadly this new found vibrancy was not converted into any more points because at crucial moments they failed to retain the ball to nail their scoring opportunities.

To their credit Blackwood withstood the onslaught until their threequaters who had been starved of any quality posses ion were able to break away from the shackles of their own heartlands to score a fourth try to end what had been an enthralling contest.

The Beaufort pack had an outstanding second half several of whom could justly be counted as Beaufort star player on the day . Their front three of Harding, Moon and Roberts excelled. Mark Heasely had fine performance in the second row while Dylan Smith gave an gritty display at scrumhalf. But edging the glory on the day was full back Darrell Roper for his all round performance

Next week Beaufort head for St Julians Newport

MARKHAM RFC 10 POINTS BEAUFORT RFC 16 POINTS

Beaufort grabbed the league points on offer to complete a rare double over their arch rivals but it was a scrappy encounter riddled with mistakes from both sides and lamentally lacking in any snap or excitement.

Beaufort were dominant in the scrums , struggled a little at the line out but suffered a real crisis at the break down where promising attacking opportunities went woefully astray because of lost possession. Despite winning the match territorially Beaufort's failure to address the problem at the ruck area kept the home side in this match putting the result in doubt until the very end

Both sides exchanged early penalties but it was not until the last ten minutes of a frustratingly sub standard first half that the match sparked into any kind of life.

Beaufort did have a good kicking game and at stand off Matthew Jordan had a superb match justifiably earning himself Beaufort's star player on the day. His neat chip behind the defence was perfectly judged for centre Darrel Roper to run onto. Roper's ability to fend off the big hits and make the hard yards has been a hall mark of his success this season and from thirty metres he made for the line before flanker Dan Purchase fastened on to a perfect off load to score Beaufort's only try . Dylan Smith kicked a tricky conversion in the a swirling wind for a lead of 10 points to 3

An horrendous turnover in Beaufort's next phase of play allowed Markham to counterattack from a deep position and Beaufort's own cover defence was found wanting. A try out wide converted from a narrow angle levelled the scores at half time.

Beaufort performance was marginally better in the second half keeping Markham locked up in their own twenty two for long periods . But despite all the pressure Beaufort failed to cross the line and had to be content with another Smith penalty.

But the lead did not sit easy with the visitors and a break out from the stranglehold gave Markham another chance which should have brought them a vital score . With Beaufort desperately defending and then infringing they elected to take a penalty and fluffed the attempt. Beaufort were off the hook and the next scoring opportunity fell to them

in the form of a penalty . Smith calmly slotted it between the uprights from thirty metres to provide a six point cushion for Beaufort which proved to be good enough to ride out the rest of a disappointing match

Next week Beaufort play host to Blackwood Stars who occupy second place in the league.

BEAUFORT RFC 55 POINTS WHITEHEADS( NEWPORT) RFC 12 POINTS

Beaufort overwhelmed their Newport opponents in a nine try blitz to give them maximum points restoring them to third spot in division 6 in the league When the mood touches them Beaufort can be uncompromising in attack and in this encounter they were clinical in taking their chances.

Whiteheads were a better outfit than the scoreline suggests which belies their lowly position in the league . With a big pack their pick up and drive game did give the home side some problems They had superiority in numbers when Beaufort had a player sent to the sin bin and took advantage to drive for the line for their two first half ties

But an in form Beaufort had a much bigger bite on the day and five minutes shy of half time had the match won with the bonus points in the bag . Two tries apiece from three quarters Dylan Smith and Mike Vaughan and one from prop Justin Roberts with added conversions gave them a 31 point to 12 lead.

There was no respite for the visitors after the break .Wih a slight wind advantage Beaufort put plenty of width on their game. Wing Kyle Purnell who had a fine match was rewarded for his handling skills under the high ball with the next try . Strident efforts from Matthew Hopkins in the heart of the pack earned him and the side a further two, together with the accolade of being Beaufort's star player on the day. His second try took the scoreline beyond the 50 point barrier. Beaufort's captain Smith got the last just short of the final whistle to finish the match off at a canter.

Next week Beaufort head to Markham and a much tougher prospect to encounter.

New Panteg Match Report

BEAUFORT RFC 36 POINTS NEW PANTEG RFC 10

It was six of the best from Beaufort to earn them a landslide success and maximum points against their league opponents. It was a thumping victory and at times played with with real electricity

The home side started well testing the New Panteg defence to its limits as they went through the phases. New Panteg held out for the first quarter but then cracks started to appear as Ben Harding Beaufort dynamic No 8 crashed over for the first of his three tries. Wing Kyle Purnell got the next latching on to a final pass to finish off a a blistering attack engineered by his forwards.

Beaufort then went into sleep mode and allowed the visitors to bring some pattern to their game in which their useful set of three quarters threatened to redress the situation

The first half ended with Beaufort's ten point lead still intact but just after the break a kick towards the New Panteg line was collected by their full back whose lightening break in a counterattack found yawning gaps in the Beaufort defence. The result was a try under the posts which was converted.

It proved to be a wake up call for the host side . They then let loose with a decisive barrage of unstoppable attacks that split open their opponents defence Matthew Burrows from fullback crafted the third try and Purnell finished it for his second . Ben Harding got the fourth, his second after a series of forward rumbles for the bonus points . New Panteg could only reply with a penalty and by the last quarter were reduced to shoring up an overworked defence.

Craig Bennett made a typical explosive charge from which try flanker Jason Taylor was the beneficiary touching down for the fifth try to put the result beyond doubt Then Ben Harding got the last, just reward for a splendid all round performance to claim his first hat trick for the club in a six try haul with Dylan Smith kicking three conversions.

This was a particularly good performance by the Beaufort pack where tight head prop Justin Roberts and his No 8 Ben Harding caught the eye to share the honours of star players on the day.

I understand your concerns with the issues arising from the tardiness of Mr Bransons train service but i think the problems lie deeper than that. The problem with space travel is that humans are traditionally built for visiting celestial heights, dogs yes, monkeys yes and even fish but for us its a no go. I can imagine the headlines Bransons Galactic Service Late and due to our physiological limitations we could possibly die because that lazy spacecraft driver is too busy finishing his breakfast over the bus i digress, its a bad idea from start to finish lets keep ourselves firmly planted to terrafirma.

The conortations of these displays relate to the sexual alignment of the animals. Ritual arse licking is versed in our culture as much as in any and is a centuries old act. Well Tarquin nothing like that has occured to me but i remember of a story of similar circumstances. A young beautiful lady caught he eye of a gent on a saturday night in The Griffen in Brynmawr. I was rightly criticised this evening by a certain Mr Sam Sugrue on my seemless neglect of this Blog. I wholeheartedly apologise, I have no excuse except that I have been a busy boy of late with work and my own blog - Bonkleg.co.uk

I realise now that my pleads for material from members of BRFC have fallen on deaf ears. I will strive to do three posts a week, of poor quality inane, childish, toilet "Beaufort RFC" humor that made this Blog succesful in its inception (there will be an interview this weekend so look out!)

My off the cuff visit to BRFC tonight (I missed training tonight becuase of work) warmed the cockles of my heart.To be in the company of some of the countries finest young minds, Nicky Burrows, Clive Williams, Mr Sugrue (seen hear with former chairman Mr Gullick) and a freshly plucked Jon Phillips discussing the exciting prospect of a future BRFC back line including Mike White and Alex McCarthy made me proud. The only problem was a certain bad taste from Rocky's new Chaffeur and Trefil's latest record signing (seen here in the trial) Stupid Lee (the boy cant seem to take a hint).

ABERTYSSWG FALCONS RFC 13 POINTS BEAUFORT RFC 21 POINTS

Beaufort''s performance was not from the top drawer but they did enough in this often scrappy encounter to win and maintain their third position in WRU Division 6.

It was though a poor start from the visitors who allowed Abertysswg to scurry away to an 8 point lead in the opening shots of the match . The hosts kicked a penalty and then stunned Beaufort with a lightening break from a quick line out to score the first touchdown out wide.

Beaufort looked to be unsettled for much of the first half not helped by a litany of unforced and garish errors which robbed them of any real momentum and style But they did have a dominance in the scrum and they made this superiority tell which eventually handed them victory

After ten minutes the home side were in all sorts of trouble in a scrummage on their 22 meter line. From the reset Beaufort worked wing Kyle Purnell into space and he shrugged of the remnants of a defence to scuttle over in the corner. Before the break a well struck penalty from skipper Dylan Smith levelled the score 8 points each

Beaufort had a much better second half taking advantage of a slight wind to keep play in the Abertysswg heartland. Both sides had players sent to the sin bin but Beaufort adapted better than their hosts . A series of infringements cost the home side dearly and Smith managed to slot over one penalty to give Beaufort the lead for the first time.

This was extended further when lock Ben Harding took a highball from a drop out .His rampaging run was stopped just short of the line but he had done the damage . Abertyswwg infringed again at the breakdown and Beaufort choice for a scrummage brought them a reward of a second try. The pick up and drive from the tail by Paul Francis to score, improved by a fine conversion kick from Smith, took Beaufort to a comfortable lead of 18 points to 8. In the last quarter a further act of indiscipline by Abertysswg allowed Smith to kick his third penalty and put the result beyond doubt.

However, the home side did demonstrate before the end what an potent attacking unit they could be . In the final exchanges of the game slick handling from their threequarters created the overlap on the flank for a corner try but too late to make a difference.

Beaufort's star man on the day was flanker Daniel Purchase.

Caerphilly Match Report

CAERPHILLY ( DEVELOPMENT) RFC 31 POINTS BEAUFORT RFC 10 POINTS

Beaufort were in this match much more than the final score suggests. They were defeated by a lively Caerphilly Development team four tries to two but gifted two of the tries through some sloppy defence work. Caerphilly punished them accordingly with lightening breaks to take the lead. By halftime the hosts were 17 points to 5 in front from two converted tries and a penalty. Beaufort's response was the first of two tries from wing man Kyle Purnell which was just reward after some stirling efforts from his centres Mike Vaughan and Geraint Phillips.

Beaufort had been working on their weaknesses at the breakdown and there was plainly an improvement on lasts week's showing . Loose head prop Matthew Harding had another fine match while at the lineout Stuart Francis had an exceptionally fine game to earn him the Beaufort star player tag on the day. Fullback Matthew Jordan also caught the eye after a long absence while hooker Gavin Williams continues to improve

Unfortunately, some of Beaufort's first up tackles were less than inspiring which against these opponents they could ill afford to do without suffering the painful consequences.

In the second half a second try from Purnell reduced the deficit but Caerphilly finished strong and scored two more in the later changes of the encounter both converted to earn them a comfortable win

Beaufort return to league duty next week with an away match against Abertysswg.

It was a great session from the ruck perspective. Instead of rucking with this mentality, (hands up im one of the worst) we can develop a more clinical approach. We got the guts we just need to work on technique.

MERTHYR RFC 20 POINTS BEAUFORT RFC 6

Without a game for a fortnight both Clubs in this friendly encounter had the opportunity to give their large squads a much needed run out At the end Merthyr had a comfortable and deserved win . They proved to be the sharper at the breakdown and wiser tactically to earn them victory from four tries taking advantage of a litany of errors from the visitors .

Beaufort had hardly settled when Merthyr opened up with a blistering attack that ended in a corner try . They added a second to this at the end of the first quarter when they out muscled Beaufort in the loose to drive for the line

Beaufort did improve and Dylan Smith kicked a penalty to keep some sort of finger tip control on proceedings. But all too often they were undone by poor handling skills and also, in key situations, conceded hard fought possession to the hosts who punished them accordingly.

Beaufort did have the edge in the scrums and their front row trio of Roberts , West and Harding gave their counterparts an uncomfortable afternoon but their three quarters were unable to capitalise from this superiority meeting stiff resistance from a determined defence . Centre Geraint Phillips gave a decent account of himself and made several penetrative bursts as did his wing man Kyle Purnell but unfortunately there was no continuity afterwards from their efforts

With a strong wind at their backs after the break Beaufort might have expected to have done better but the home side were next to score which was the best try of the match . Slick handling skills in an impressive attack from 40 metres resulted in a third try wide out to extend their lead to 15 points to 3. Beaufort responded with another Smith penalty

Both sides then made a raft of substitutions but the jumble of changes did little to enhance Beaufort's scoreline and before the contest ended they conceded a fourth try

Beaufort will need to be stronger at the breakdown and be more creative behind the scrum before they return to league duty. However at present they are a very young side still on a learning curve and the Club coaches will be well pleased with the positives taken from this entertaining match

BEAUFORT RFC 12 POINTS CAERLEON RFC 15 POINTS Beaufort desperately needed a league win to keep them near the top of division 6. Sadly it was not to be though they should ponder on how they could lose a game in which they dominated territorially and had so much possession to conjure up a win. For long periods Caerleon were pinned inside their own heartlands as Beaufort tried to steamroll them into submission But Caerleon's much heavier pack proved a difficult nut to crack and throughout the match maintained a titanium like defence that showed no signs of wear despite the relentless tackling Dylan Smith did kick two penalties in the first quarter before disaster fell on the home side A high clearance kick found space behind the Beaufort attack which bounced back onto itself into the waiting arms of the Caerleon wing. who had the pace to run the 60 metres to cross over under the posts . Beaufort got the lead back to 9 points to 7 with another Smith penalty only to see it cancelled out when Caerleon got one of their own . Just before the interval another rare visit to Beaufort territory brought its reward for the visitors as the host side allowed a speculative kick to go unchecked . The upshot was a corner try to give Caerleon an improbably lead of 15 points to 9 The visitors might have taken advantage of the wind after the break but they seemed content to sit on this lead and soak up the home side attacks while their opponents were undone by a lack of invention to tactically change the direction of their game Flanker Jason Taylor and his number 8 Andrew Morgan both made some explosive breaks to keep the Caerleon overworked defence fully occupied but the all important drive on the line could not be engineered . Fresh hope came in the form of a fourth Smith penalty to bring Beaufort within reach of the lead . In the final 10 minutes there were furious exchanges as both sides battled it out on the Caerleon try line Beaufort star player on the day Ben Harding had a fine match and he came tantalisingly close to getting the vital score . However , to Caerleon's credit they kept their composure and refused to buckle under the onslaught to ride the match out . Clearly disappointed at the final whistle Beaufort had to make do with the losing bonus point.

What happened chaps? That was a target home win. We knew it would be a difficult game cos Caerleon are always a hard nut to crack.

I thought the 2 training sessions we had in the week were probably the best this year. We had numbers, enthusiasm and a willingness to train hard!!

Lets not press the self destruct button just yet. We are still in a good league position but my fear is that the season will fizzle out. I and the rest of the coaching staff will do out utmost to ensure this wont happen, but ultimately its down to you players.

I wont be there on Monday but will on Thursday. Chin up chaps.

Abercynon Match Report

Date:- 24th January 2009Venue:- AbercynonFixture:- Friendly ABERCYNON (SECONDS) RFC 12 POINTS BEAUFORT RFC 16 POINTS It was a lively friendly encounter that got Beaufort back on the winning track but the match proved to be bereft of any creative rugby. Beaufort had a marked superiority in the scrummage against a heavier home pack and more than held their own in the line outs . However, the visitors lacked the snap to make this advantage tell falling foul of the referee with a raft of infringements and acts of indiscipline. The Abercynon standoff siege gun infield kicks kept Beaufort pinned back for long periods and he eventually kicked four long range penalties which kept the final result in doubt to the very end Two penalties in the first quarter had Beaufort chasing the score . There were some electric bursts from the base of the scrum by Matthew Burrows which should have ended in a better result . Beaufort had to wait until Geraint Phillips back for his first game after his jaunt to Australia got the first points. He robbed his opposite number of the ball and had the wit and pace to run the last thirty metres to the try line . Dylan Smith's conversion nudged Beaufort in front 7 points to 6 Before half time another long rang penalty restored Abercynon lead to the interval. But after the break Beaufort got it back again with penalty of their own . That didn't last very long because the prodigious kicking of the home standoff cancelled this out and Beaufort were again chasing the ;lead . But the last quarter Beaufort wore down the opponents and costly acts of indiscipline allowed Beaufort's captain Dylan Smith to slot over two further penalties before the end Beaufort can be well pleased with the performance of their youngsters. Daniel Purchase at flanker had a very impressive match as did loose head prop Matthew Harding . Substitute back rower Paul Francis made a difference when he came on in a better second half for the visitors but Beaufort star man on the day was Geraint Phillips for a superb all round performance in attack and defence Next week Beaufort go back to league duty with a home match against Caerleon RFC who are just below them in Division 6 BARRIE CASWELLPRESS OFFICER

Hartirdge Match Report

HARTRIDGE (NEWPORT) RFC 30 POINTS BEAUFORT RFC 11 POINTS

Beaufort did give a decent account of themselves in terms of effort and commitment but it wasn't enough to defeat Hartridge who have justly earned themselves a reputation of being the sharpest and best organised outfit in Division 6 (East) . The visitors conceded 4 tries to 1 and in the end struggled to cope with the pace and precision of the Newport side.

However, for the first half hour the sides looked evenly matched without a decisive score although Beaufort had a couple of penalties that narrowly missed the uprights . But the warning signs were there when they struggled to get good quick possession from the set pieces Within 5 minutes of the closing moments of the first half a series of blistering attacks on the flank from the home side exposed weaknesses in what had been a solid Beaufort defence . This resulted in a try wide out . Then from the restart Hartridge launched an attack from a deep field position and caught Beaufort napping to make another touchdown before they could regain their composure . Beaufort struck back from two Dylan Smith penalties to end the first half 10 points to 6 in arrears

Shortly after the break the host side converted two penalties as Beaufort infringed at the breakdown But as the third quarter ended Beaufort took the ball through several phases and rumbled towards the Hartridge line .Scrum half Damon Morris finished it off and drove over for the touchdown to cut the deficit 16 points to 11

But there was no alarm in the home camp. With real electricity in a barrage of attacks they immediately flew at the Beaufort defence which eventually succumbed to leak two further tries and put the game to bed both to end an enthralling encounter

Beaufort can take some comfort from the performance. Lock Mark Heasely had a good game in the loose while Ben Harding made a welcome return to the fold to strengthen the pack. Drafted in for emergency duty at full back Scott Griffiths had a fine match which earned him the accolade of Beaufort's star player on the day

Next week Beaufort are seeking a friendly match away .

Rocky Interview

Sorry Chaps about the lack of interview this week but my phone is knackered, I did manage to get an interview with Jason "Rocky" Taylor after the game.

The transcript is a follows

Hoppy: Jason what do you think of todays game?

Jason: huh

Hoppy: Top of the league clash, four weeks after our last game, I felt very rusty myself but I thought the boys stuck at it well

Rocky: hmm, yeah

Hoppy: The score didnt reflect the game, nice to see the Harding brothers playing together, the discipline was good dont you think.

Rocky: (saying nothing but shows me coke club ball)

Sorry chaps for not updating the blog lately I have been withou t'internet connection for about 6 6weeks. ( im writing this on my lunch break in work)

Any way keep posted the interviews will start again, so will gomez's corner.

I am look for suggestions for new intersting content things such as Dai Leyshon's colour of the week or Club lookalikes e.g Damon Morris aka Jools holland.

Any way its all good stuff, rest assured all will be sorted ready for the second half of the season.

I cant wait for Crick on Saturday
