Aberdare Match Report

Date:- 27th September 2008
Venue;- Aberdare
Fixture;- Friendly
ABERDARE (SECONDS) RFC 9 POINTS BEAUFORT RFC 34 POINTS
Beaufort managed six unanswered tries in their first friendly fixture of the season but should have produced a hatfull more from the amount of possession won. Their front row of Marcus Rose, Glyn Moon and Justin Roberts destroyed the home scrum that was permanently in reverse gear most of the afternoon while behind them locks Mark Heasley and Matthew Hopkins reigned supreme in the line out.
However, the first half was riddled with unforced errors and some sloppy handling to deny Beaufort putting the match out of sight by the interval. They did get two touchdowns and these came from the few well structured attacks. Centre Geraint Phillips was the beneficiary of the first in his comeback match, courtesy of a fine run by wing Nicky Jenkins and in the second quarter of play Kyle Purnall got a second .
Aberdare's only real threat came from the boot of their standoff whose siege guns kicks out of defence kept Beaufort at bay. He also kicked three long range penalties taking advantage of the wind to keep his side in touch with the lead which was 12 points to 9 at the halfway break.
But there was no Plan B in the Aberdare armoury and in the second half Beaufort cut loose with a decisive barrage of attacks in a much improved performance to score four further tries. Purnall got his second and Beaufort's third try and on the hour Scott Griffiths cut the line for the next. By this time all resistance had faded and Beaufort finished the match at a canter. Flanker Andrew Morgan featured several times before latching onto the final pass for the next score with his captain Dylan Smith kicking the extra points and Jason Taylor got the last before the referee blew up early
For Beaufort there were eye catching performances again from Mike White drafted in at scum half and flanker Andrew Morgan. Prop and newcomer Marcus Rose had a sound match and shows promise but Beaufort's star man on the day for his destructive attacks at the opposition defence was flanker Jason Taylor
Next week Beaufort are back to league duty and head to Caerleon.

Ten Rugby Quotes

Planet Rugby brings you some classic quotes from the historical archives.

1. "Remember that rugby is a team game; all 14 of you make sure you pass the ball to Jonah." FAX to the All Blacks before the 1995 World Cup semi-final.

2. "I think Brian Moore's gnashers are the kind you get from a DIY shop and hammer in yourself. He is the only player we have who looks like a French forward." Former England prop Paul Rendall on his front row colleague.

3. "You've got to get your first tackle in early, even if it's late." Welsh hardman Ray Gravell explains his rugby philosophy.

4. "I played ten injury-free years between the ages of 12 and 22. Then, suddenly, it seemed like I was allergic to the twentieth century." Former England scrum-half Nigel Melville who spent most of the 1980s injured.

5. "We're going to tear those boys apart." Message pinned up on the changing room wall by England skipper Will Carling before his team ran out to face the All Blacks in the 1995 World Cup semi-final in Cape Town. It took at least 70 seconds for New Zealand to score their first try as they demolished England 45-29.

6. "Don't ask me about emotions in the Welsh dressing room. I'm someone who cries when he watches 'Little House on the Prairie'" Former Welsh second row Bob Norster remembers that special Dragons' atmosphere.

7. "There's no doubt about it, he's a big bastard" Gavin Hastings, master of the bleedin' obvious, on Jonah Lomu.

8. "The relationship between the Welsh and the English is based on trust and understanding. They don't trust us and we don't understand them." Former RFU supremo Dudley Wood on Anglo-Welsh relations.

9. "If you can't take a punch, you should play table tennis." Former French skipper and coach Pierre Berbizier illustrates his nation's attitude to on-pitch violence.

10. "A player of ours has been proven guilty of biting. That's a scar that will never heal." Bath coach Andy Robinson after his prop Kevin Yates was suspended for taking a chunk out of an opposing flanker's ear.

Thank God for Man City Takeover.

After last nights training it seems the Man City Take over has definitley put a smile on little Huw's face.

Seeing the smile in training make feel the same as when I saw Halleys comet in 1986.

It was still blinking hard though.

Match Report - Hartridge 21 September 08

BEAUFORT RFC 18 POINTS HARTRIDGE ( NEWPORT) RFC 19 POINTS
Beaufort fully expected this to be one of their hardest challenges of the season and they were not disappointed. The Newport side possessed the diamond cutting edge of a well organised outfit which earned them the Division 6 east league title last season . They outgunned the home side in terms of possession and had Beaufort's line out and scrums in a state crisis for much of the first half .It brought them two well worked tries early on and they looked good for a lot more.
However, Beaufort did not lose their composure and it says much for the fitness of this mostly young side in the tackle area to allow them contain their opponents from running riot as well as the confidence to crawl back into this match . They stayed in touch with the lead to cut the deficit by the half time whistle to 12 points to 6 courtesy of two Dylan Smith penalties
Hartridge were next to score. They broke clear from a breakdown for a third try minutes shy of the hour and with a wide angled conversion stretched the lead to 19 points to 6. But Beaufort were showing all the signs of a recovery . The paucity of possession in the first half which rendered their three quarters redundant was now reversed and Smith at standoff, having a fine match, peppered the corners with accurate kicks . From a lineout Beaufort pinched the ball and Andy Hill, switched to emergency duty at hooker mid way through the match, was the beneficiary for a deserved try which Smith narrowly failed to convert. Hill's physical bravery had a marked effect on the team and on the game as it progressed earning him Beaufort's star man of the match.
There was more to come in the last quarter as Smith now had the chance to unleash the Beaufort three quarters. Centre Mike White who continues to impress was a constant threat to the opposition whenever he received the ball . Blessed with an abundance
of talent his lightening speed and courage allowed him to smash through the Hartridge defence to get Beaufort's second try under the post leaving Smith a simple conversion. With only a one point deficit the game was now poised on a knife edge . Improbable as it seemed at half time, Beaufort were buoyed up to steal the result form the league favourites The chance came as the game clock was ticking to almost fulltime. From thirty metres Smith had the opportunity of a penalty. He struck it superbly but the ball veered the wrong side of the uprights and Beaufort's last chance of glory had gone
With no league match next week Beaufort are looking for an away friendly fixture.

New Panteg Match Report

NEW PANTEG RFC 7 POINTS BEAUFORT RFC 38 POINTS
Beaufort put last week's disappointment behind them with comprehensive win against the host side outscoring them 6 tries to 1 and gaining a bonus league point. Beaufort's young blades had a point to prove and they did so in an impressive style playing all the creative rugby . Centre Mike White cut the gap in text book fashion in the second quarter to score two tries to end a first half with a Dylan Smith conversion 12 unanswered points.
After the break the flood gates opened as Beaufort cut lose to reduce the home side to defend with increasing desperation. Full back Matthew Burrows having a match finished off a slick handling movement for a third try courtesy of a buoyed pack, which all afternoon made the hard yards to keep their hosts permanently on the back foot Momentarily, New Panteg did catch Beaufort out with a solitary try, superbly converted from the touchline to reduce the arrears 19 points to 7. But for the home side it was a rare moment of opportunity since for much of this match they were perpetually on the brink of the last tackle .
By the third quarter the game was over as a contest . Wing Kyle Purnell got Beaufort's fourth try under the posts . Prop Justin Roberts from a tapped penalty crashed through a tired defence for the next and a thirty metre run from Beaufort's talisman Justin Bennett got the last with his captain Dylan Smith kicking the extra points from four conversions.
In the back row Matthew Purchase in his first league game of the season had a fine match as did Mike West at hooker but Beaufort's star man on this occasion for his jack in the box performance was centre Mike White.
Next week Beaufort potentially play their toughest encounter against last years league leaders at home against Newport's Hartridge RFC

Return of Gomez

It was nice to the best looking prop in Welsh rugby Justin "Gomez" Roberts make a welcome return to training. It was a beasting some of our backline caught here showing how its done. I was fine this morning getting to work I felt like a lion, the old bonk was just chipper.

A Coaches View (Fort v Crickhowell 6th Sept 2008)

Well, where do I start!! A very, very disappointing performance. After an excellent training sessions indoors on Thursday i was feeling confident about the Crickhowell game. I knew Crickhowell would be a tough nut to crack, after all we only just beat them at home and lost to them down on their patch. We seemed very lethargic from the off. The chase at kick offs was particularly alarming to me. They gathered the kick off with ease, there was no-one within 20 yards of the receiver. They were a physical side and didn't need an invitation to run at us. We'll certainly address that in training!!

There were positives however. First phase position on the whole was good. The line outs went well again and the scrum was just about OK, still work to be done there though. Our fitness is progressing nicely. We were pressing at the end.

Assigning responsibility to players about certain parts of the game seems the way to go.

New Panteg on Saturday is another potential banana skin and if the chaps aren't switched on, then they are in for another uncomfortable afternoon.

See you on Thursday for fun and games.

Yours as always
Glyn

Match Report Crickhowell

BEAUFORT RFC 8 POINTS CRICKHOWELL 15 POINTS
This was a disappointing result for the home side who had high expectations of a first league win following two very promising trial matches. Crickhowell had done their homework and came with a highly organised defence which kept Beaufort in check for much of the encounter. The damage was done in the first quarter. The visitors kicked a penalty and then from a break out, scored a try under the posts. Crickhowell then were content to sit on this 10 point lead and profit from Beaufort's mistakes of which there were many.
Beaufort 's failure to function at the line out until the second quarter did not help retrieve the situation and there were too many turnovers at the breakdown .Beaufort also choose not to kick for goal when they had the visitors pinned down .Frustratingly, the elusive try never came and they ended the first half with just three points in the bag from a Dylan Smith penalty
But it was a better second half and the reward for their efforts came in the shape of a well worked try conjured up from a a long pass to wing Kyle Purnell who ran in from 25 metres unchallenged . Smith's conversion narrowly shaved the uprights and for a while Beaufort seemed poised to overhaul their opponents. But silly acts of indiscipline lost them hard fought possession. Then what might have snatched the lead came in the last ten minutes of play. A scintillating break from Matthew Burrows, now switched to fullback, opened up the Crickhowell defence . Damon Morris carried on the movement to within sight of the line only to be brought down by a last gasp tackle so tantalisingly close to the all important score . Sadly it proved to be Beaufort's last chance. Crickhowell, who kept their composure throughout kicked them selves out of trouble and wisely kept doing so to ride out the match. In the dying moments a failure by Beaufort to cover a long clearance kick gifted Crickhowell a corner try to seal a deserved victory..
For Beaufort there was an eye catching first half performance from Matthew Hopkins in the second row until his injury. The ubiquitous Andrew Morgan on the flank had a particularly good game following his welcome return from injury but Beaufort's star man chosen on the day was Justin Bennett who locked the scrum and was never far from the action
Next week Beaufort travel to New Panteg.

The Gwent Gazette Report - Beaufort Vs Trefil

Honours were even at the end of Beaufort's second trial against long standing rival Trefil RFC. Both scored two tries apiece (Matthew Burrows and Paul Francis) with one conversion (Dilwyn Smith) and both teams gave a decent account of themselves in typically tenacious commitment and effort.

Beaufort suffered one injury worry to Lee Hazlewood, who twisted an ankle early on. But apart from this most of its squad had a run out without further casualty worries.

It was a testing encounter from their arch rivals before the league season begins at home against Crickhowell RFC.

In other news
Beaufort RFC was honoured to have a guest appearance of Anne (Eeh eeh eeh) of Little Britain fame at our exclusive Sunday Club.
Longstanding member of Beaufort RFC, Mr David Leyshon regrettably had to spurn her amorous advantages because his sunday roast was in danger of getting cold.

Video Report Beaufort v Trefil 30th Aug 2008

Undefeated in 2!!! Not a bad start chaps, very pleasing. Realisticely though we should have scored a few more tries. Territory wise we had at least 70% of the game. We r not quite clinical enuff to finish em off, but when our fitness levels rise then so will our ability 2 kill off teams.

From a 4wards coach point of view, i was happy with the lineouts, simple calls and they were executed well, the scrum was a difficult 1 2 gauge cos they went passive in the 2nd half. The ruck was a tad frustrating 4 me cos they slowed the ball down very well. Buzz was constantly trying 2 dig the ball out, but we'll work on that in training.

All in all, i woz reasonably pleased but we'll need 2 raise another notch to challenge teams on the 6th division.

Cu 2nite
